This week we have been working on our upcoming exhibition for the Birnam Book festival which will be taking place from the 23rd to 25th of October 2026. We have had two clubs this week; Monday Memories and our Young Archaeologists’ Club. Monday memories were having a look through our postcard collection and discussing how the Villages have changed over the years. Our Young Archaeologists’ Club were learning about the Neolithic and creating their own replica Petrospheres from clay. The Young Archaeologists’ Club is open to new members aged 8-16 who would like to learn about History and Archaeology. Our group meets every other Thursday from 3:30-4:30pm in the Dunkeld Community Archive. Our next session will be on Thursday the 24th of September.
Our Adult’s Archaeology and History club session will be starting again for the Autumn Winter season. All talks will be held on the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm in the room above the Perth Arms Pub unless otherwise stated. Talks this year will be for Members only, if you are interested in joining, please get in touch via manager@historicdunkeld.org.uk .

We received a fantastic object this week; a scrapbook diary from a Scottish Horse soldier written during the Second Boer war. This book contains a wide range of materials; from handwritten details of the regiments movements to hand pressed flowers collected during his time overseas. Condition checking items like these when they enter our organisation is an essential part of the accessioning process, we will ensure that the book is stored appropriately and check for any damage when it arrives with us, the items condition is carefully recorded so that the information can be revisited at a later date to check for any changes.
We have planned our next public consultation session, we will have our next in person event on the 14th of October at 7pm in The Duchess Anne, Dunkeld. to learn what progress we’ve made towards a Heritage Centre where Dunkeld and Birnam’s remarkable story can be told.
