There has been lots on this week! Monday began with a visit in The Cross from a Military VS Cancer group taking part in the challenge of pulling a 1-ton Field Gun all the way from John O’Groats to Land’s End – over 1,000 miles on foot – to raise funds and awareness for Military vs Cancer. On Monday morning the team had made their way from Ballinluig to Dunkeld! We wish the team and all others taking part good luck on their journey.

Monday memories paid us a visit on Monday afternoon, they were looking through some photos from the the Royal School of Dunkeld ahead of the 1970s school reunion on the 11th of October. Tickets are available for the event from Dunkeld Community archive or from the Birnam Arts.

Our volunteers were hard at work this week helping us finish off the exhibition on Buchanans in Dunkeld ahead of the Meet the Buchanans screening in Birnam Arts on Thursday evening. This gave us a fantastic opportunity to explore our collection and learn new things about one of the local families.

Here is the new Buchanan Clan Chief John Michael Baillie-Hamilton Buchanan being presented with a large wooden plaque bearing the Buchanan family crest (you can see a glimpse of our exhibition on the boards behind).

Ruth attended the Scoto “Press Pause”  meeting held in Birnam earlier this week. Press Pause aims to help communities manage their tourism in a more sustainable and manageable way. Lack of infrastructure to support large amounts of tourism is a major issue in many rural Scottish towns and Villages.

In October Dunkeld and Birnam will be hosting Localfest25, Scotland’s first regenerative tourism festival. Tickets are available to purchase from the localfest website.

On Thursday afteroon we also had our Young Archaeologists’ Club. The kids were visited by Derek Hall who is an archaeologist. Derek led a pottery identification workshop for them. They even had a look at some of the pottery from their own excavation in Dunkeld.

Our first Archaeology and history club talk  was last Friday evening in the Perth Arms Hotel, it went great! We have had lots of members sign up, check out our clubs page for info on how to join. Our next event will be a skills workshop with Dr Gavin Lindsey on the 25th of September. Check out our what’s on page to find out more.

The official club launch was held on the 13th of September and included a session on topgraphical and geophysical survey from DR Gavin Lindsay which people could participate in! This was also part of Scottish Archaeology Month.
