This week we have been busy digitising images as part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund Shops and Houses project, we have a large number of photographs and maps which we have been utilising to create the project write up and we are so excited to share everything which we have learned during the project with you all.
We repackaged an item in storage this week, it is important to be aware of risks to your collection and this includes other artefacts which may be harmful! We repackaged a bottle this week using appropriate inert materials as it had previously been used to store methylated spirts and it’s cork was still in place resulting in a chemical smell being apparent on the item. It is important to monitor your collection and take part in preventative conservation activities to preserve your collection for future generations. The bottle in question is the feature photograph for this week’s update, the methylated spirits were bottled by J.M.Walker, the pharmacist who worked on Bridge Street in the 1940s.
Monday Memories have been hard at work creating easily accessible albums filled with the photographs used at the previous school reunions for visitors and former pupils of the school who may be interested in having a look. A big thank you to the team who organises the school reunion for donating some of their profits to providing archival storage material for the school photograph collection.
We had a visit from Gillian from Museum Galleries Scotland on Friday as part of the Museum Futures programme, it is lovely to have visits from other organisations and find out what’s going on in the sector and sharing what we’ve been up to here in Dunkeld.
Our Archaeology and history club had a lovely time this week learning how to draw sections. This is an essential part of the archaeological process and is key to recording the site accurately for future interpretation of the excavation. We are so happy to see our club members learning new skills during this excavation, they will be invaluable to have during future excavations.
