This week has been very busy. Monday had our usual memories group; this week they were looking at school photographs. On Monday we also had some exciting updates to our upcoming escape room project, the team organising the puzzles popped up to see us and plan what would be happening. We will be launching the escape room this year, it will be based in the archive, so keep a lookout for more information coming soon. Thank you again to Museum Galleries Scotland for the funding to start this project!
This week is the start of the Archaeology and History club’s excavations for summer 2026. The first is a 4-day dig currently taking place at the site of the King’s Seat hillfort, which was previously excavated by Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, the Dunkeld and Birnam Historical Society and AOC Archaeology. The full excavation book has now been published; it is available to purchase as a physical copy or is available as an open-source document online. Click here to read or purchase the book. This new excavation is of a lower terrace of the site. So far they have found evidence of a large fire which damaged the wooden ramparts of the site. This excavation has taken place in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen as part of their Northern Picts project led by Professor Gordon Noble.
The next excavation begins next week at the site of St Jerome’s chapel. We will update you on how the excavation is going in next Friday’s update.
We are continuing to research our National Lottery Heritage fund Project “Shops and Houses”, soon we will start compiling the information for exhibition. It has been very interesting to learn about the history of the village through this project. The next phase of our National Heritage Lottery Fund project includes our public consultation phase. We have created a new online form to gather thoughts and opinions from people on what they would like to see from a new heritage centre. Please take a moment to fill out this form to help us with our redevelopment plans. There will also be online-hosted interactive sessions in July, please sign up to take part in one or more if you are able. Click here to fill out the form.
Our next Living History event for 2026 still has a limited number of tickets available.
We have new items in our shop! We have a range of new books, tea towels and totebags available now. Pop into the archive and have a browse.
