As part of our National Lottery Heritage funded project, we are going to be consulting with a variety of different local community groups to ask them what they would like to see from in the new heritage centre as part of our redevelopment plans. We started this process by consulting our Monday Memories group! They are frequent users of our facilities and have an interest in local heritage, it was lovely to hear their thoughts and feelings (including what sorts of things they like to buy from the gift shop).

We will be consulting with other local community groups in the coming months to gather more opinions and information so look out for us coming to chat with your group. If you are not in one of the many local groups and clubs and have ideas you want to share, please get in touch with us.

We have been busy training this week so the archive has been closed to the public on both Wednesday and Friday so that we could undertake our first aid training.  This is essential training for us as we run multiple groups and clubs including our Young Archaeologists’ Club. A big thank you to Pete from First Aid Perthshire for providing the training and to the Council for British Archaeology for funding this training.

Our Young Archaeologists’ Club this week were learning about medieval marginalia and illumination. This ties well with the history of Dunkeld as there was originally a school connected to the Cathedral. Bishop George Brown, Chancellor of Dunkeld Cathedral, founded a Grammar School in the early 16th century for the education of choristers.

YAC were decorating their initials, they also added some fun marginalia to their illumination work. Have a look and see below.

Our archaeology and history club had a skills session with Bob Carchrie about LiDar and Aerial Photography, the meeting was a sell out and we had to move venue from the Perth Arms to the Chanonry as we required more space for all the attendees. It is fantastic to be able to provide these skills sessions to our members and we are happy to see more and more faces each time. Your support means the world to us!

We have more events planned for this year so far, the next is Murder, Monks, Mittens and a Maid; The Story of Perth’s oldest house with Lindsey Gibb in the Perth Arms on Friday the 13th of February at 7:30pm. This is the story of the Fair Maid’s house in Perth, Lindsey will be presenting this talk on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society of Scotland for our Archaeology and History Club. Members of Historic Dunkeld get access to all of our Archaeology and History Club talks for free.

All upcoming events are listed within our What’s on page on our website,  you can also stay up to date with what’s going on in our organisation by signing up to our newsletter. There is a sign up available at the bottom of the page.
