Here we have Ian Shields a member of Sir Arthur Erskine’s regiment next to his 1992 painting of the Battle of Dunkeld. The battle of Dunkeld took place on the 21st of August 1689 as part of the Jacobite risings. Ian is in Dunkeld this weekend with the Sir Arthur Erskine regiment taking part in a weekend of reenactment, guided tours and performance. He kindly loaned his painting to us for the weekend!

There has been lots happening this week. Midweek memories came in to visit on Monday, we were looking through photographs from the Royal School of Dunkeld. This was a very productive exercise and we added lots of names and dates to go alongside the photographs and add context.

The Young Archaeologists’ went back to school this week so they were back in to see us on Thursday afternoon. We had a great time catching up on their summer activities and then we decorated Jacobean era Dirks and Targes as our meeting was on the 336th Anniversary of the Battle of Dunkeld! They were still feeling very summery and went for a variety of fruity and summery motifs, sunshine inspired!

Ruth and the volunteers busy preppring the targes. The young archaeologists’ having fun decorating them before the Jacobite events.

Friday is the start of our Jacobite festival events, Friday has guided tours and an evening performance of Killiecrankie-oh, this will feature the Erskine regiment retelling the bloody story of the Battle of Killiecrankie which took place the month before the Battle of Dunkeld.

The weekend’s events continue with a free reeenactment camp over Saturday and Sunday. There will also be more guided tours on Saturday from 10:30-3pm. Tickets cost £10, under 16s go free.
