In memoriam of Dorothy Reader

We begin on a solem note this week, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dorothy Reader. Dorothy was a regular at our midweek memories club and was always happy to share her memories of the village and reminisce with her friends. All of us here in the archive and at midweek memories mourn her loss and will miss her deeply. We send her family and loved ones our deepest sympathies.

We have included a copy of one of Dot’s favourite photographs from our archive which was personal to her; a photograph of her and her grandfather Alexander Campbell taken in 1936 when she was just a baby.

We have had several lovely accessions this week including two written life histories from local people. These are amazing resources for us her in the archive, if you have anything you would like to donate to us, please get in touch.

We are finishing the preparation for our next exhibition on local industry and have discovered some very interesting information during our research.

There is a step during flax processing where the woody outer layers are removed from the fine fibres inside the stems there are apparently two names for this process scutching (the most common) or swingling! Which name do you prefer, vote below!
