It is now May and the busy summer season has begun! This week has brought fantastic weather and with it lots of visitors…

We have now launched our animated heritage maps. This is an extention of our heritage walks of Dunkeld and Birnam, the blue plaques which are followed have been transformed into short animated films which are accessed by scanning the QR codes on the map.

The animation was created by Studio Puddock which was founded by our former Kickstarter Steven Goodison. Steven now has his own animation studio and has worked with us over several projects. This most recent project was large enough that Steven was able to employ additional animators!

The 8th of May 2025 marked 80 years since VE Day, the celebration of the end of fighting in Europe during the Second World War. We hold both regimental and local history archives so decided to post photographs from both perspectives; local people celebrating in Dunkeld and Scottish Horse troops celebrating across Europe.

Gallery of Photographs from celebrations at home on Cathedral Street, Bederkesa in Germany and St Mark’s Square in Venice.

We are now planning our summer exhibition but we need your help! We need artefacts relating to weaving, milliners, cobblers, farming (although we don’t have the space for a tractor!). If you have any objects at home looking for a chance to be in the spotlight for a few months please consider loaning or donating them to us for our exhibition.

Our young archaeologists are still continuing their excavations. This week they got to try using mattocks! We found some rather exciting worked flint this week which is interesting because there are a very limited number of places in Scotland where flint occurs naturally.

Our living history events started today! Disorder in Dunkeld with Viking raiders and traders from the Glasgow Vikings. The group are leading a selection of guided tours of the Village for us today and saturday and also have an evening performance showing off the fashions of the era alongside telling the tales from the viking sagas. Have a look at our what’s on page to find out about the events across the rest of the summer.
