This week has mostly focused on behind the scenes activities…

We have started the process of moving our book collection into a new storage area to ensure they are in optimal conditions for storage and appropriate safekeeping.  This has been an excellent opportunity for us to update our database with condition updates on books within our collection as well as updating indexes and keywords to ensure that the search function becomes more user friendly to help volunteers and researchers locate exactly the information they are looking for.

As part of the maintenence of the museum and archive we have blunder traps located throughout the building. This is an essential part of the pest management within museums as it allows you to see which little creatures are creeping and crawling around dark corners.  This is really important for monitoring if there are harmful pests putting your collection at risk! Thankfully we have no dangerous pests in the museum or archive but staying on top of what is going on is essential to the safeguarding of the collection.

Our young archaeologists club continued their local dig on Thursday they had an excellent time learning about the excavation process and even did some finds processing by washing the finds from last weeks excavation.

We would like to say a big thank you to Museum Galleries Scotland and the Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development trust for their funding which has allowed us to undertake this amazing project with the kids and UHI Students (and enthusiastic adult volunteers).

1. Kids, students and volunteers working hard excavating the trench.

2. Sieving the excavated material to check for finds that may have been missed accidentally.

3. Moving buckets of soil and the spoil heap so far…
