Another busy week here in the archive. We started the week with Monday Memories popping in for a visit, they have been busy organising school photographs into different eras to place in specific albums.
Our neolithic Ceramic workshop with Emma from Bog Born Crafts was on Wednesday, the group had a fabulous time learning about historic pottery techniques and styles. The group went through the whole process from cleaning their own natural clay to tempering it using sand and grass to then create their own ceramic items. It was brilliant to embrace this hands on experience and see just how difficult it would have been to create something we take for granted these days such as a pot. Keep your eyes peeled on our events and eventbrite pages for future workshops we will be hosting. Our next living history events are part of the Jacobite festival. This will be a weekend of re-enactment by the Sir Arthur Erskine Regiment on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of August 2026.
Emma has also been commissioned by us to create some new shop items as she is an experimental archaeologist and potter to trade. We have a new collection of earrings, necklaces, mugs and pictish piggies available for purchase from the archive. Pop in to have a look!
We have our final online public consultation on the 31st of July on Gathertown, get in touch to sign up. We have another in-person consultation event taking place on the 22nd of August from 5pm to 8pm in the Archive. Come along to share your thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Our Archaeology and History club met on Wednesday evening in the Archive to take part in some finds cleaning after our St Jerome’s excavation. Bob our local archaeologist gave the group a talk on post excavation activities to start the evening and let everyone know how important the work that comes after excavation is too.
We have been busy compiling the information for our shops and houses project which has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Museum Galleries Scotland and SSE griffin. We look forward to the exhibition launch which coincides with our Jacobite Festival and in-person Consultation events, we hope to see you all there!
